What is the N-Methylpyrrolidone?
N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP) is an organic compound consisting of a 5-membered lactam. It is a colorless liquid, although impure samples can appear yellow. It is miscible with water and with most common organic solvents. N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP) is an excellent solvent, widely used in coatings, fuel, pharmaceutical, chemical products, lithium batteries and other fields.
In the pharmaceutical industry, N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP) is used in the formulation for drugs by both oral and transdermal delivery routes, mainly used in medicine, veterinary drugs, pharmaceutical intermediates.
In the industrial field, N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP) can be used in acetylene concentration, butadiene extraction, electrical insulation materials, high-grade coatings, pesticide additives, ink, pigment, industrial cleaning agent and other industries. NMP is also used heavily in lithium ion battery fabrication, as a solvent for electrode preparation. Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in portable electronic products, such as laptops, mobile phones and digital cameras.
It is also used as a solvent in the commercial preparation of polyphenylene sulfide. Taking advantage of its nonvolatile nature and ability to dissolve various materials, N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP) can also be used in the petrochemical and plastics industries as a solvent.

How is N-Methylpyrrolidone produced?
There are several methods that can be used to produce N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP).One common method for the production of NMP involves treating γ-butyrolactone(GBL) with methylamine, which is under high temperature and high pressure.This reaction is typically mixed in tube mixer and γ-butyrolactone(GBL) can be produced by dehydrogenated of 1,4-Butanediol (BDO). Alternative route includes the partial hydrogenation of N-methylsuccinimide and the reaction of acrylonitrile with methylamine followed by hydrolysis.
Another method for the production of N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP) is pyrrolidone method which based on pyrrolidone and haloalkanes as raw materials.
